πŸ”΄ LIVE: Margaret River Pro QFs on Standby β€” Next call April 25 | Ewing knocks out world #1 Pupo | 🌊 Gold Coast up next: May 1–11

Editor's Note β€” Issue #5

"

I know. John John Florence again. I genuinely tried to write this note about someone else β€” and then the Cloudbreak episode of VELA dropped. And that was that.

JJF skipped the entire 2026 tour to sail the Pacific with his wife and son on a catamaran called Vela. Six episodes. This week's drop is Cloudbreak β€” arguably the best wave in the world β€” and Florence is out there threading barrels that would end most careers. The man is off tour and still surfing better than anyone on the grid. What do you want me to say.

Elsewhere: Margaret River is on standby at the Quarterfinals. Heavy WA swell, shifting winds, next call April 25. Pupo still leads the CT, Brazil still owns four of the top five, and Ethan Ewing just knocked out the world number one in a heat. Things are starting to shift.

Oh β€” and dawnpatrolsurf.com got a full refresh. Go check it out. We're looking clean.

John John Florence. Off tour, sailing the Pacific, and still surfing Cloudbreak like it owes him something. The VELA series is a different level.

Margaret River QFs Locked In β€” Ewing Knocks Out Pupo

Event 02 of the 2026 CT is on standby at the Quarterfinals. The heavy slabs of Western Australia have been delivering all week β€” and the draw just got a lot more interesting. Ethan Ewing knocked out world number one Miguel Pupo in a standout heat, reshuffling the title conversation. Pupo still leads the overall standings but his grip on the top just got tighter.

CT Standings β€” After Event 02 Semis | Margaret River

πŸ”΄ QFs on Standby

Margaret River has reached the Quarterfinals and is on standby with next call April 25 at 7:15 AM AWST. Conditions have been heavy and unpredictable β€” the WA coast delivering exactly what you'd expect.

⚑ Ewing Knocks Out Pupo

Ethan Ewing produced one of the performances of the event, surging past world number one Miguel Pupo to advance. It's the kind of heat result that puts the entire title race back in play.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡· Brazil Still Controls the Top

Despite Pupo's elimination, Brazil still holds four of the top five CT slots. Yago Dora, Medina, and Samuel Pupo are all alive in the standings β€” the yellow jersey isn't going anywhere easily.

🌊 Next: Gold Coast May 1–11

After Margaret River wraps, Event 03 moves to Snapper Rocks for the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro (May 1–11). Sand-bottom barrels, long walls β€” the season shifts into another gear.

John John Florence John John Florence is, by most measures, the greatest surfer alive. Raised at Pipeline on the North Shore of Hawaii, he debuted on the CT at 17 and spent the next decade redefining what progressive power surfing could look like. Three world titles. A list of tube rides that doesn't fit on a page. The kind of surfing that makes judges look twice and crowds lose their minds.

But in 2026, JJF isn't on tour. He's sailing the Pacific on a catamaran called Vela with his wife Lauryn and son Darwin β€” and filming everything. Six episodes. This week's drop is Cloudbreak, and it's exactly the kind of reminder you didn't know you needed: the best surfer in the world, at the best wave in the world, with nowhere else to be.

Pyzel Ghost β€” The Pyzel Ghost is one of the most iconic shortboards of the last decade β€” and John John Florence's board of choice. Designed with moderate rocker for drive off the bottom and control through the barrel, it rewards surfers who lean into powerful, committed turns. The Ghost doesn't forgive laziness, but in the right hands β€” and at the right wave β€” it's untouchable.
